The book revolves around two female protagonists, Shirley and Caroline, as they explore friendships, romance and their position in society against the background of great social change. Set during the Luddite movement which began in 1811, Shirley is a thought-provoking historical novel covering multiple important issues such as social justice and the role of women in nineteenth century England.
